Hello, my name is Kelly Thomson, I am an Accredited Social Worker, Counsellor, and Play Therapist.
I started my career over 25 years ago working with children and families within the Child Protection and Looked After Children system across the North of England.
After a big life move overseas to Australia, I worked within the Families First, Not for Profit sector before working as a paediatric hospital social worker. Here, I incorporated trauma informed practice to support parents and children who experienced a traumatic injury, diagnosed with a long-term illness, living with chronic pain or experienced medical trauma within the inpatient and outpatient setting.
Alongside offering Play Therapy and Youth Counselling, I work as a Counselling Clinical Educator, with Bachelor and Master of Counselling students in their final year internships within community organisations across the Sunshine Coast.
I believe every child has the right to reach their full potential and I am passionate about working in collaboration with parents and the systems in a child’s life including school and community services to foster children’s healthy development, enhance relationships and create sustainable change.
Working from humanistic principles, I trust we all possess the capacity to build resilience and positive self-esteem to navigate personal life challenges. I provide an empathetic, non-judgmental space for children and youth to be their authentic self and explore their inner world to find strength in the knowledge they can “Just be you”.
